Reimagining the former market square with your feedback
As part of the regeneration of Wythenshawe Town Centre, we’re planning to transform the outdoor spaces throughout Civic into places that everyone can enjoy. But before we develop our plans further, we wanted to find out what matters most to the local community.
Over the past few months, we’ve been out and about speaking with local residents and businesses about what they would like to see in these spaces, including the former market square.
Out in the community
Earlier this year, we held a drop-in event at Open Space, and it was great to see so many of you there. You shared your ideas by voting on our boards, chatting with the project team and filling in feedback leaflets. There was plenty for families to enjoy, with free face painting and sunflower planting, while younger visitors drew pictures of what they’d love to see in the former market square.
As well as the event, we ran a series of polls on Facebook and Instagram, asking what you would most like to see in the square. Outdoor activities came out on top, followed closely by flowers, trees and benches. The voting boards at Open Space produced a similar result, with outdoor activities once again proving the most popular choice. A special mention goes to the bug hotel, which picked up a small but loyal following!
Building the future in LEGO
We wanted to hear from more younger people in the community too, so we teamed up with Bricklands for a LEGO workshop for 30 Year 6 pupils at St Anthony’s Primary School, and 30 Year 5 pupils at Haveley Hey Community School. The children were invited to build their vision for the future market square using LEGO, and they were full of creative ideas.
Their designs included water fountains, water slides, skate parks, a basketball court, a football pitch, play areas, food stalls selling drinks, cakes and hot dogs, a spring garden, and plenty of trees and flowers. There were some more ambitious suggestions too, including an animal park and even a drive-through Nando’s!
What you’ve asked for
There were some clear themes that came from your feedback. You told us that you’d like the square to be greener, with more trees, flowers and even a community herb garden. You also said you wanted comfortable places to sit, including benches, outdoor seating and relaxing areas for parents. Above all, you said you wanted more things to do in the square, with outdoor activities for all ages, and especially a play area for younger children.
We’ve taken all of your ideas on board and we look forward to sharing our updated plans with you soon, so watch this space!
